L. John Andrew

The L stands for Louis, but everyone calls me John.

I work primarily with metal, making one-of-a-kind pieces and small production runs of furniture, sculpture and other objects.

My two main interests in working with metal are PROCESS and FORM. These are two elements that are constantly playing off of each other in my work. Sometimes I start with an idea of a process that drives the form of a piece. And at other times I am thinking of a particular form, and searching for the perfect process to create it.

Ever since my first Art Metals class I have been captivated by the processes of creating objects in metal. A sense of empowerment in transforming raw materials into a finely crafted product still drives the work I do today.

I received a BFA concentrating in Art Metals from University of Wisconsin-Stout. I was a Core Fellow at Penland School of Crafts. I received a MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art.

I live in Minneapolis with my wife and two children. My studio is located in a former General Mills factory building in Southeast Minneapolis.
